The History of Geansaí Árann

The Aran Sweater (Geansaí Árann) takes its name from the three Aran Islands off the coast of Galway. Originally the traditional Irish clothing was worn mainly by fishermen to withstand the cold out at sea.

The Aran sweaters were made with unwashed sheep wool that still contained natural oils (lanolin) which made them water-resistant. They were left un-dyed leaving them the natural cream colour. They usually combined five to six different complex stitch patterns in a single garment.

These days all of our Irish knitwear incorporates the finest of wool, with both contemporary and more traditional styles available. Made to withstand the harsh Atlantic weather these garments will stand the test of time.
