Before you take the leap over the pond and land in Ireland for the first time this summer there are a few things you will need to have with you! Preparation is key and with Irish summers being infamous for not sticking to the status quo of sun and heat it is important to know what to pack and bring with you!
Here is a brief list of a few things you will need when you travel to Ireland this summer:
1. A Camera
Ireland is known for being one of the most naturally beautiful countries in the world. With its luscious green and never-ending fields along with the wild and windy coastlines everywhere you look is an ideal opportunity for a photoshoot. Make sure you have your camera at the ready as you will no doubt be using it a lot.
2. An Aran Sweater
The Aran Sweater is definitely something you may regret not taking with you. With the weather so unpredictable you will be so pleased to have a little bit of style and comfort to ease the pain of watching the rain splash against the pavement on your “summer” holiday.
Donegal Merino Wool Blasket Aran Sweater $94.95
3. Good walking Boots
These are an absolute necessity, if you’re not trekking across the beautiful countryside or hiking up through mountains and forests then you will be busy walking through the bustling towns. Even the country’s capital Dublin is small enough to walk around but bear in mind you will be on your feet a lot.
4. A Map
Unless you feel like spending hours in a field that looks exactly the same as the ones surrounding you, a map is something you will need. The Irish road signs are not famous for being helpful so you may be relying heavily on your map. And good luck trying to find an internet signal at the top of the mountains!
5. A Cape
An Irish cape will keep you warm and protect you from all sorts of weather provided to you by Mother Nature when visiting the Emerald Isle. This is a purchase you won’t regret when you wrap yourself up in one of the cosiest garments you can wear.
Classic Charcoal Double Faced Wool Cape $399.95
6. A Good Sense Of Humor
The Irish are known for their wit and sarcastic sense of humour so this is something you will have to bring with you if you are going to join in on the “craic” (the Irish word for fun). Be prepared for plenty of laughter and slagging as the Irish embrace you and the meaner they are the more they like you so don’t be offended.
7. Water Proof Clothing
Not sure if you have gathered this by now but we get a lot of rain in the summer so be prepared and pack the waterproofs. There’s not much worse than trekking around in soaking wet clothes, and the rain here is not like that of monsoon season, it is very cold! The highlight of this is it is extra green!
8. A Healthy Appetite
Forget about the Mediterranean diet of light foods and salads, Irish food is something to look forward too and you are guaranteed to be full after every meal. With some of the world’s finest beef on offer alongside organic fruit and vegetables and of course the infamous potatoes you will be spoiled for choice.
Adapters are cheap and can be purchased in many places, they are also a must bring unless you do not want to use any electrical goods. The voltage is a lot greater in Ireland so be wary and uses a transformer to adjust the voltage.
Enough about all the rain and bad weather, Ireland does have its moments and when it does it is one of the most majestic and beautiful places to be. So be prepared when travelling to Ireland because when the sun does decide to come out it really does shine and leads to a lot of red skin!
