I hope I find you all well. So this week I’m continuing my series exploring our much loved Irish craft traditions. This week it’s the turn of the much loved and sought after Irish linen.
Woven from the flax plant, linen is the most ancient of materials. It has been discovered in the tomb of Tutankhamen and is mentioned in the book of Genesis when the Pharaoh dressed Joseph in “robes of fine linen”. Its association with luxury is still as strong to this day.
The origins of the production and use of Irish linen are hard to pinpoint but early Christian records show Irish saints in linen clothing and it is said St. Patrick was dressed in a linen shroud upon his death. We know that the industrialization of the Irish linen industry really took off in the 17th century and was concentrated in the Ulster area. By the mid-19th century, Belfast had become the biggest linen producer in the world and earned the nickname Linenopolis.
Pictured above is the amazing Irish Linen Center and Lisburn Museum, just outside Belfast. I highly recommend a trip there to discover all there is to know about Irish linen in their award-winning exhibition ‘Flax to Fabric: the Story of Irish Linen’.
