Hi everyone. I hope I find you all well. This week, I’m exploring the history of one of Ireland’s best loved jewelry symbols. The Claddagh ring is a traditional Irish ring that is instantly recognizable thanks to its unique design of two hands holding a heart, topped with a crown. The ring is steeped in history and tradition, and has become an enduring symbol of Irish heritage and love. It is one of our most popular Celtic jewelry designs at The Irish Store.
The Place

The Claddagh ring originated in a small fishing village called Claddagh, located just outside the city of Galway in Ireland. Its exact origins are unknown, but it is believed to date back to the early 1700s. The design is said to have been inspired by the Roman “Fede” rings, which featured two hands clasping each other.
The Story of Richard Joyce

Many myths and legends surround the origin of the Claddagh ring, but the most romantic of them all is my favorite. This tale dates back approximately 300 years. It tells the story of Richard Joyce, a Galway silversmith who, around 1675, set sail for the West Indies. Along the way, he was captured and sold into slavery. His master, a Moorish goldsmith, taught him the art of his craft.
After 14 years in captivity, Joyce was finally freed and returned to Galway, where his true love had faithfully waited for him. During his years of enslavement, he crafted what we now recognize as the Claddagh ring as a token of his love for her. The ring’s design carries deep meaning: the heart represents love, the hands signify friendship, and the crown symbolizes loyalty.
How to Wear the Claddagh Ring

The direction in which the ring is worn can indicate the wearer’s relationship status. Worn on the right hand with the heart facing outward, it indicates that the wearer is single and looking for love.
If the ring is worn on the right hand with the heart facing inward, it indicates that the wearer is in a relationship.
If the ring is worn on the left hand with the heart facing outward, it indicates that the wearer is engaged, while wearing it on the left hand with the heart facing inward signifies that the wearer is married.
