Wrap up for fall in style and comfort with our large range of Irish Sweaters from the West of Ireland.
Dating back to the early 1900s, the Aran Sweater (Geansaí Árann) originated from the three Aran Islands off the coast of Galway, a harsh environment that takes the brunt of the rough Atlantic ocean. The traditional Irish clothing was originally worn by fishermen to withstand the severe conditions out at sea. They were made using unwashed sheep wool which still contained natural oils (lanolin) which made them water-resistant. Combining five to six different complex stitch patterns in a single garment, they displayed a tapestry of intricate skill and craftsmanship.
Combining traditional Celtic styles with more contemporary patterns, Aran Sweaters and Knitwear are more prominent than ever in Irish fashion, although it’s more common to see famous international stars wearing the clothing than Irish homegrown trendsetters.
Made to withstand the harsh Atlantic weather, these garments will stand the test of time.
