How to Care for Your Aran Sweater: Our Top Tips.

Hi Everyone. I hope I find you all well this week. It's no secret that Aran Sweaters are by far our most loved products here at The Irish Store. This timeless symbol of Irish heritage and craftsmanship is more than just a piece of clothing—it's a cherished heirloom.

These beautifully crafted garments, known for their intricate patterns and cozy warmth, deserve special attention to maintain their beauty and longevity. Whether you're a proud owner of a traditional Aran sweater or looking to invest in one, knowing how to care for it properly is crucial. Here's our 5 top tips to help you preserve its quality and charm.

How to Care for Your Aran Sweater: Our Top Tips.

1. Washing your Aran Sweater

Rule number 1- Step away from the washing machine!!! Of course, you will occasionally need to wash your sweater but never in the machine. Hand wash your sweater using gentle wool washing detergent and in cool water below 30 degrees Celsius. Always dry your sweater flat and reshape whilst damp. Never wring or scrub. The tumble dryer is also strictly out of bounds! Alternatively, you can take your sweater to a reputable dry cleaner.

2. Wind Washing

The benefits of airing your sweater frequently, otherwise known as “wind-washing” cannot be underestimated. Hang your garment out in the air and you will be amazed at how fresh it becomes. A well-ventilated room will also do the trick if the weather is not on your side!

3. Wool Pilling

Remove the little balls using a small pair of scissors or a razor blade, being careful not to damage the fabric by cutting too close to the surface. Better still, purchase a sweater comb or electric fabric shaver and then drag it across the fabric to remove the pills.

4. Storing your Aran Sweater

To ensure your sweater retains its shape, we recommend that you store folded rather than hanging it, as this may cause your garment to stretch over a period of time. If storing for a long period, we recommend a muslin linen bag to allow the natural fibers to breathe while being stored. A moth deterrent such as mothballs or lavender is also highly advisable to keep those pesky bugs at bay – especially in the summer months!
