What is the Origin of the Irish Wool Cape?
The classic cape which fastens at the neck and drapes to below the knees with a hood is a direct descendant of the cloaks which were worn as far back as the Bronze Age. The traditional Irish shawl or “Galway Shawl” was a single piece of fabric which was either woven, knitted or crocheted, typically finished with a fringe. They became popular in the late nineteenth century in Ireland and continued to be worn up until the 1950s.
