Iconic Aran Sweater to take pride of place in major fashion exhibition at New York’s MoMA.

I hope you all had a good week. I just had to interrupt our travels around Ireland this week to share some exciting news. Our beloved Aran sweater has earned itself a place in the “Is Fashion Modern” exhibition which runs at New York’s Museum of Modern Art from October until January 2018.

Chosen as one of 111 items of clothing and accessories that have influenced fashion over the last 100 years, the Aran sweater will sit by side by side with such fashion icons as the little black dress, the biker jacket, the Wonderbra and Levi jeans to name but a few. The sweater chosen to be on display will be on loan from The National Museum of Ireland in Castlebar County Mayo and was knitted in 1940.

It’s wonderful to think that this humble Irish fisherman sweater that began life as a keep warm garment for Irish fisherman should now be considered an icon of international fashion.  The journey to international stardom surely began when the Aran was worn in the 50s and 60s by Hollywood royalty such as Steve Mc Queen and Grace Kelly, giving our national sweater instant cool and putting it firmly on the fashion map.

 Of course, it’s no surprise to me that the Aran Sweater has achieved such status. This age-old Irish craft tradition continues to endure and now comes in many exciting styles.
