Iconic Symbols of Ireland. The Claddagh Ring.

Written by Lulu O'Sullivan

Hi everyone. I hope I find you all well. This week, I continue my series exploring some of Ireland's most iconic symbols. The Claddagh ring is a traditional Irish ring that is instantly recognizable thanks to its unique design of two hands holding a heart, topped with a crown. The ring is steeped in history and tradition, and has become an enduring symbol of Irish heritage and love. It is one of our most popular Celtic jewelry designs at The Irish Store.

The Place

The Claddagh ring originated in a small fishing village called Claddagh, located just outside the city of Galway in Ireland. Its exact origins are unknown, but it is believed to date back to the early 1700s. The design is said to have been inspired by the Roman "Fede" rings, which featured two hands clasping each other. The Claddagh design replaced the clasping hands with hands holding a heart, symbolizing love, and added a crown on top to represent loyalty.

During the 19th century, the Claddagh ring became popular outside of Ireland and was exported to other countries, particularly the United States. The ring is often worn by Irish immigrants as a symbol of their heritage and as a reminder of their homeland.

The Meaning of the Claddagh Ring

Throughout the years, the Claddagh ring has been associated with many different meanings and traditions. The direction in which the ring is worn can indicate the wearer's relationship status. Worn on the right hand with the heart facing outward, it indicates that the wearer is single and looking for love.

If the ring is worn on the right hand with the heart facing inward, it indicates that the wearer is in a relationship.

If the ring is worn on the left hand with the heart facing outward, it indicates that the wearer is engaged, while wearing it on the left hand with the heart facing inward signifies that the wearer is married.
