Celtic Jewelry - Claddagh Rings

Legend has it that the original creator of the Claddagh ring, an Irish silversmith by the name of Richard Joyce, was enslaved in North Africa in the 17th century and spent 14 years in captivity.

Upon his release, he returned to the tiny Galway fishing village where his sweetheart was waiting and presented her with the very first Irish Claddagh ring.

What is the story behind Irish claddagh rings?

The story of the Claddagh ring is a very romantic one. Richard Joyce was enslaved in North Africa in the 17th century and spent 14 years in captivity, during this time he made a Claddagh ring for his sweetheart who remained in Ireland. Once he was released from slavery, he gifted her this ring. It is a beautiful message of love, loyalty and friendship.

What makes a Claddagh ring authentic?

An authentic Claddagh ring is steeped in Irish tradition and crafted with care in Ireland itself. True to its origins in the fishing village of Claddagh in Galway, a genuine ring features the iconic symbols — hands for friendship, a heart for love, and a crown for loyalty — all beautifully balanced in design.

What are Irish Claddagh rings made of?

Claddagh rings are traditionally made from gold and silver, but other metals can be used. In more recent times diamonds, emeralds and sapphires have been added to the heart shaped jewel. Whichever way your Claddagh ring is made, it is a great way to show your affection to someone you care about.

How should I wear my Irish Claddagh ring?

There are many ways in which women wear Claddagh rings. If one is dating, the ring should be worn on the right hand with the heart facing outwards. If you are in love and in a relationship your ring should be worn on the right hand with the heart facing inwards. Once married, the ring is transferred to the left hand with the heart still facing inwards which is a sign of commitment and love.
