Irish Coffee is a famous drink around the world. A favorite of many in winter and around the Christmas period, we have found the perfect Irish Coffee recipe so that you can enjoy this Irish favorite wherever you may be!
Originally invented by Joe Sheridan in Foynes, County Limerick, a small town in the Midwest of Ireland, Irish Coffee has become a popular choice of beverage by tourists in Ireland.
The history behind the drink goes the whole way back to 1943 when a flight from Foynes to Botwood, Newfoundland, Canada was forced to turn back because of bad weather. The passengers were brought to The Airport Bar and Restaurant in Foynes for some food and a hot drink to warm them up. Joe Sheridan, who worked in the airport bar and restaurant at the time, made the passengers up a warm coffee and decided to put some Irish Whiskey into the mix. When Sheridan was approached by one of the passengers asking “was that coffee Brazilian”, he jokingly replied “that was an Irish Coffee”.
He brought the new drink to his boss, Brendan O’Regan who was very impressed and so the Irish Coffee began! They started to serve the new beverage at Foynes to all passengers. Today Irish Coffee is still served to all dignitaries who arrive at Shannon Airport.

Pre-heat a clear stemmed Irish Coffee recipe glass with very hot water. Empty the water, and add 2 teaspoons of brown sugar. Add some freshly brewed rich coffee and stir. When the sugar melts, add a generous measure of Irish Whiskey (about 2.5cl). Stir again, then wait for the brew to still. Take a hot teaspoon and pour gently whipped fresh cream slowly over the back of the spoon. Your cream should be “half whipped” i.e. not too stiff and not too liquid. The perfect Irish Coffee should look pretty much like Ireland’s other famous drink – Guinness!
