The Irish Store has just launched an extensive new range from West End Knitwear. West End Knitwear is based in the village of Monasterevin in Co Kildare. The company was set up in 1957 by Molly Cullen. Molly is the granddaughter of Kate O’Shea, who in 1856 was the first craftswoman in Ireland to commercially market her hand-knitted woollens. The family-run business continues to grow worldwide, now the largest Aran sweater producers in the world.
Aran sweaters date back to the early 1900s originating on the three Aran Islands off the coast of Galway. Wives of fishermen used to make these sweaters for their husbands to withstand the harsh Atlantic weather whilst out at sea. These jumpers continue to be crafted in the same way using the traditional Aran stitching patterns combined with more contemporary styles to produce these world-renowned Irish garments that are more prominent than ever in the fashion world.
Take a look at our authentic new range of Irish wool sweaters and purchase yourself a beautiful Irish garment and display your Irish heritage with pride.
