Happy Monday Everyone! I’m interrupting our weekly Virtual Tour of Ireland (don’t worry, we’ll be back on the road on Friday!) to bring you news of the latest celebrity Aran fan. Last Friday, pop megastar Taylor Swift released her latest album, Folklore, recorded at her home in LA. The promo shots feature the singer in a roll neck Aran sweater.
I think you’ll agree she wears it very well and here at The Irish Store we have seen a very definite uplift in sales and searches in recent days for our roll neck styles. This is not surprising considering Taylor’s huge popularity and following. We experienced a similar surge in interest last December when Chris Evans appeared in an Aran sweater in the movie Knives Out
“The only thing I will say about knives out is that, upon seeing Chris Evans in a sweater, the girl next to me gasped and said very softly and tenderly, ‘Sweater.’ ” This was the tweet from film critic Anna Menta that went viral in December, attracting some 50.000 likes.
Before you can say “cable stitch”, Aran sweater only screenings of the movie were being organised and sellers of Aran sweaters everywhere couldn’t keep up with the demand including ourselves here at The Irish Store (thanks Chris Evans!). We even get a mention in an article in the New Yorker! Apparently Chris took all his Aran sweaters home when the movie wrapped and even treated his dog, Dodger to his very own Aran-too cute!

It seems the appeal of the classic Aran sweater shows no sign of diminishing. Not bad for a sweater that began life on a remote island off the west of Ireland to keep fishermen protected from the elements.
Of course, Taylor & Chris are the latest in a long line of celebrities to don our iconic national sweater. Here are some of my past personal favorites;
My Top Celebrity Aran Sweater Fans
1. Grace Kelly
Grace Kelly appeared in an Aran sweater on the cover of Vogue in 1950. From this moment, the humble fisherman’s sweater was destined for worldwide fame. Grace Kelly was the epitome of old school Hollywood sophistication and glamour. An endorsement from such a star was instrumental in the Aran sweater becoming a design classic.
2. Steve Mc Queen
Almost 50 years before Chris Evans appeared in Knives Out in an Aran sweater, the ultra-cool Steve Mc Queen appeared in one in the classic movie, The Thomas Crown Affair in 1968. Here he is pictured with his director on the set of that movie in a classic Aran with honeycomb, cable and diamond stitches.
3. Marilyn Monroe
Marilyn, the most iconic of all Hollywood movie stars wore an oversized Aran and tights for a song and dance number in her last movie Let’s Make Love in 1960. A far cry from the islander fishermen of Galway Bay!
4. Elvis Presley
So it doesn’t get much cooler than Elvis! Here’s the king of rock and roll wearing his turtleneck Aran sweater on the set of Jailhouse Rock in 1957.
It’s safe to say that the Aran sweater has now become a fashion staple and wardrobe must-have. In 2017 it took its a rightful place in the Is Fashion Modern exhibition which ran at New York’s Museum of Modern Art.
