Hi everyone. I hope I find you all well. So this week I’m continuing my Irish journeys series with a visit to the beautiful province of Connacht. Prepare for a wealth of stunning landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture. Here’s my top 5 places to visit in this beautiful part of the world.
Top 5 Places to Visit in Connacht
1. Connemara National Park
Located in County Galway, Connemara National Park is a breathtaking wilderness area known for its rugged mountains, vast expanses of bog, and beautiful lakes. Visitors can explore the park’s walking trails, enjoy panoramic views from Diamond Hill, and discover its diverse flora and fauna. It also the home of Ireland’s ancient gemstone, Connemara Marble which is a big favorite here at The Irish Store.
2. Kylemore Abbey
We stay in County Galway for a visit to Kylemore Abbey. This magnificent castle and estate nestles by a stunning lake and is surrounded by mountains. The abbey features Victorian gardens, a Gothic church, and a fascinating history. Visitors can take guided tours of the castle, explore the gardens, and enjoy the peace and tranquility.
3. Achill Island
Time to head to County Mayo now for a visit to Ireland’s largest island. Achill Island boasts dramatic coastal cliffs, golden sandy beaches, and picturesque villages. Visitors can hike along the stunning Great Western Greenway, go surfing, cycling, or simply relax and take in the island’s natural beauty.
4. Sligo and Yeats Country
A visit to Connacht would not be complete without a visit to my favorite County Sligo. There’s a wealth of wonderful places to visit here. The county is renowned for its association with the famous poet W.B. Yeats. The region, known as Yeats Country, is filled with landscapes that inspired the poet’s works. Visitors can explore places like Lough Gill, Benbulben Mountain, and the ancient Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery.
5. Westport
Westport is a charming town known for its Georgian architecture, lively pubs, and friendly atmosphere. It serves as an excellent base for exploring the surrounding countryside, including the enchanting Clew Bay, Croagh Patrick (Ireland’s holy mountain), and the picturesque town of Cong.
Thanks so much for dropping by. Do join me next week for a trip up north to the province of Ulster.
Take care of yourselves and each other,
