Hi Everyone. So our next stop on my Meet the Makers roadtrip is the wonderful Aran Woolen Mills in Westport, County Mayo. On the way from Donegal, I stopped off for the night in my beloved County Sligo. The next morning, before heading down to Westport, I took a short detour to the foot of my favorite Irish mountain, Benbulben so I could share the view with you all. Enjoy!
Aran Woolen Mills
Aran Woolen Mills is one of Ireland’s premium makers when it comes to Aran sweaters and we are delighted to carry many of their gorgeous styles. This family-run business in the west of Ireland is surrounded by the most magnificent scenery with the mighty Croagh Patrick providing a stunning backdrop. I sat down with Vincent to find out more about the story of Aran Woolen Mills which began over 50 years ago……
Aran Woolen Mills-Lulu’s Top Picks
1. Traditional Aran Sweater
Our number one customer favorite Aran sweater comes from the wonderful makers at Aran Woolen Mills. This is Aran knitwear at its finest and this classic crew neck has stood the test of time, from its humble beginnings as a fisherman’s sweater to its current status as an iconic fashion classic and must-have wardrobe staple. It comes in no less than 11 gorgeous colors including brand new black. The perfect gift for him or her.
2. The Kinvara Aran Jacket
Next up we have a gorgeous Aran cardigan for her. Again, the Aran stitch craft is exquisite, featuring the honeycomb stitch to wish you luck and the fisherman’s rope cable stitch to wish you plenty. Choose classic cream, pale denim blue or new season charcoal.
3.Lined Shetland Zipper Cardigan
Combining traditional Aran stitching with modern styling, this super cozy cardigan is fully lined and has a fleece lined collar for extra warmth. It also features 2 front pockets and a drawstring hem. It comes in navy or charcoal and the reviews are glowing!
4. One Button Aran Cardigan
“The sweater was given as a gift and was exactly as expected. Recipient was thrilled with color, quality and style of the sweater.” Just one of the many 5 star reviews for this super stylish Aran cardigan. Available in six great colors and featuring a wide relaxed collar and one button detail.
5. Hand Knit Aran Zipper Cardigan
So how about a stunning hand knit from County Mayo? My final pick from Aran Woolen Mills is this truly outstanding Aran cardigan for him or her. It features the iconic Aran diamond stitch, a symbol of plenty and according to Aran Islander legend, it is said to represent the farmers’ fields and the mesh of the fishermen’s nets. It also features a snug fleece lined high collar, two front pockets and is crafted from the softest merino wool.
Next stop – Connemara, but before we leave Westport, here’s a short stop off in Clew Bay at the foot of Croagh Patrick, one of Ireland’s most iconic mountains.
I hope you enjoyed our visit to meet Vincent at Aran Woolen Mills. Do join me next time when I’ll be arriving in Connemara to meet Stephen Walsh of Connemara Marble at his quarry in Lissoughter County Galway. Can’t wait to share it with you!
Until then….
Take care of yourselves and each other,
Slán go fóill!
